Stash Joy
Your Craft Stash Is Magic
Every New Year, you hear it: someone making the resolution to stop buying more craft supplies. We understand and often feel the pull. The idea is simple—save money by using up what we already have. It’s a noble goal, but let’s be real: without a plan for organizing your existing supplies, it can quickly become a frustrating, uninspiring task.
But here’s the twist: organizing your craft stash isn’t just about tidying up. It’s about making your materials visible and accessible—displaying them in a way that not only keeps you organized but also sparks joy and creativity every time you walk into your space. When you display your supplies thoughtfully, they stop being just items you need to sort through and start becoming part of the creative process.
Organization is where the magic happens—when you intentionally organize your stash, you fuel your creative spirit.
When your stash is both organized and beautifully displayed, it transforms from a jumble of materials into a curated collection of inspiration. It’s like having an art gallery at your fingertips, a visual playground where new ideas come to life. And yes, that includes the materials you may not use often (but oh, you’ll definitely get around to them!). Whether you’ve got materials you use daily or ones you’re saving for the perfect project, they’re all ingredients in your creative recipe.
Your Stash is a Treasure Chest, Not a Hoard
Many crafters—especially those who embrace the fiber arts—often find themselves with lots of materials. And yet, there’s no shame in having a stash! In fact, it’s an investment in your imagination. Think of your supplies as an ongoing invitation to create. Artists have far more ideas than they ever produce, and a stash allows those ideas to come to life.
But here’s the catch: your stash needs to be accessible and pleasing to the eye. When you can see your materials, you’re more likely to interact with them. Organizing isn’t just about tidying up; it’s about making sure that each piece sparks joy and gives you the tools to explore your creativity.
So, what’s the solution to the “I-can’t-find-that-perfect-thread” dilemma? It's simple: intentional organization and display. By taking a few moments to categorize and arrange your materials thoughtfully, you turn what may seem like clutter into an organized treasure chest of possibility.
Joyful Organization is a Playground for Your Imagination
The true power of your stash lies in its ability to inspire. When your materials are beautifully organized and on display, they’re not just there to be “used up”—they’re there to be loved. And that’s where joy begins.
Here’s the secret: crafting materials, like vibrant threads, colorful yarns, or unique fabrics, should evoke an emotional reaction every time you look at them. Do they make your heart race with excitement? Do they offer a spark of dopamine each time you run your fingers through them? If yes, keep them. If not, it might be time to part with those items that don’t make you feel that burst of creative joy. Before you send them off, take note of what first attracted you to it - was it the color? the feel and texture? was it a gift that missed the mark? There is a good deal to be learned even in what you don't like! Organizing your stash with care helps you recognize which materials resonate with you, and which ones just aren’t your thing anymore. And the best part? It’s like a buffet of inspiration—waiting to be explored.
Once you see your materials clearly, your creative ideas will flow more easily.
If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a half-empty thread box or a jumbled pile of yarn, wondering where to start, you’re not alone. Part of the beauty of crafting is that it’s a process of discovery. Some ideas are born quickly, while others evolve slowly. The key to nurturing that process is having access to your tools—and loving the ones you have.
When you organize your materials, you’re giving yourself the freedom to experiment. To try that yarn you’ve been saving for a special project. To dig through your fabric stash and stumble upon a piece that inspires a new design. When your supplies are neatly displayed and categorized, it’s easier to be spontaneous. The ideas practically jump out at you!
And here’s another secret: part of becoming a skilled crafter is learning which ideas to act on and which ones to let go. You might start a project only to abandon it halfway through—and that’s okay. Creative freedom comes when you allow yourself to explore and embrace the materials you love, and let go of the ones that no longer inspire you.
There is Joy in Displaying Your Craft Stash
Now, let’s talk about display. A stash that’s beautifully organized is a stash that invites you to interact with it regularly. But what if you don’t have the luxury of a dedicated crafting space or a large display area? No worries! You can still create a system that’s both functional and inspiring, even in a small space.
For those of us working in tighter spaces, think outside the traditional "display" box. Consider organized boxes and bins that fit neatly on shelves or in closets—these can be just as visually satisfying when arranged with intention. Choose clear containers or colorful bins that reflect your personal style, making it easy to spot what you need, while keeping things tidy and accessible. Labeling can also help you maintain order while adding a personal touch to your storage.
Another option is to digitize your stash. Platforms like Ravelry are perfect for cataloging your yarns. (If you know of apps and platforms for threads and fabrics, please tell me about them!) Whether it’s noting the colors, fiber content, or quantities, an online catalog can help you keep track of what you have, and it’s a fantastic way to browse through your supplies when you’re looking for inspiration. This method is especially helpful for fiber artists with large stashes that might not be as easy to display physically.
The key here is to keep your materials accessible, whether that means displaying them in a beautiful way you can see daily or organizing them in a functional system that works for your space. When you create a visually organized space—no matter how small or compact—you’re giving yourself the opportunity to enjoy your materials and spark new ideas. After all, crafting is about more than the finished project; it’s about enjoying the process, from start to finish!
The Key to Creativity is in Your Stash
In the fiber arts -no matter if embroidery, knitting, or sewing-, creativity thrives on materials, but not just any materials—the right materials, organized and displayed in a way that delights your senses and fuels your imagination. Your stash is more than just a collection of threads, yarns, and fabrics—it’s a key part of your creative process.
So, this year, instead of restricting yourself by “resolving” to stop buying more supplies, take a step back and reorganize. Curate your materials with intention, showcase them in a way that brings you joy, and allow your stash to be the spark that sets your creativity ablaze.
Remember: A well-organized, aesthetically pleasing stash isn’t just an investment in supplies—it’s an investment in your imagination.

For floss (dmc, anchor, cosmo and so many more), cross stitch charts, fabric and beads there is Xstitch (free and $10/year paid versions). Sadly, even with the inventory I have bought pattern duplicates but I have saved the $10 subscription by realizing I already had something.
