What is a Stash?
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with someone to help with marketing. The thing that keeps coming to mind while mulling over what they had to say, was their pushback on the word "stash". This marketing coach isn't a crafter or artist, and the term was foreign. I can't fathom it being foreign to a crafter or artist, but I love that it made me think far more deeply about it as a term.
When I was primarily a knitter, 'stash' is THE word to describe the stockpile of wooly goodness that we hoard. A local fabric and yarn store in town is literally named "Stash". When I was in art school, maybe we didn't use the word as frequently to describe our collection of paints and supplies but it seems ubiquitous among the fiber craft and arts friends.
I gave an AI generator the prompt "colorful floss stash on light colored background" and it seemed to get the gist, even if it was still a strong 'go home you're drunk' image of thread:
Merriam-Webster defines stash like this:
These definitions definitely work with what I've known and come to use as my primary vocabulary to refer to my collection. Especially when it's a long running joke that we have to hide our stashes and new acquisitions from praying and judging eyes.
What word do you use? Is it your stash or something else?
